• Your baby needs to sleep on a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition. Always buy a new one when kitting out your nursery.

Don't fall asleep when you're in bed with them - it's especially important not to fall asleep in an armchair or sofa. • Consider giving your child a dummy at night. Recent research has found that having a dummy at night may help to reduce the risk of cot death, although it is not really clear why.
