Read more at:
In the last part, mothers can see the first four tips to keep safe sleeping for baby.  To know more useful tips, please continue reading part 2!

  • Your baby needs to sleep on a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition. Always buy a new one when kitting out your nursery.

  • Don't smoke round your baby, or anywhere in the house. Your baby is safest in their own cot or crib. Don't fall asleep when you're in bed with them - it's especially important not to fall asleep in an armchair or sofa. If you do choose to bed-share with your baby, check out the bed-sharing advice and guidelines given here.

  •  The safest place for your child to sleep is in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you for the first six months.  This includes both naps in the day and at night.

  • Breastfeed your baby - it's believed to be a factor that reduces the risk of cot death. There's lots more advice on breastfeeding here.

  • Consider giving your child a dummy at night. Recent research has found that having a dummy at night may help to reduce the risk of cot death, although it is not really clear why. If you are breastfeeding you should not offer a dummy in the first month or so, and it is advised that you begin to wean them off it from six months, when the risk drops dramatically, so that by the time they're one they don't have one at all, as recommended by speech and language experts.  There's more on dummies here.
